Toronto Harbour has a rich maritime history, with the harbour playing significantly into the growth of our city. In the early days of York, the sheltered harbour served as the primary point of entry into town, and the western gap - then the only opening to the harbour - was treated as the city's main strategic point. Improved relations with our neighbours to the south, and the opening of the eastern gap by a storm in the 19th century, led to the decline of the harbour's military importance. In the following years, the  harbour would transition from primarily industrial uses to the mostly recreational waterfront we see today. In today's Photo of the Day, submitted to the UrbanToronto Flickr Pool by Jamie Hedworth, a tall ship sails across the harbour with the iconic Toronto skyline serving as a backdrop.
