While it is hardly a landmark, many Torontonians are familiar with the rainbow-painted pedestrian tunnel which passes below a rail line east of the DVP near Lawrence Avenue, providing a fleeting shot of colour to passerby speeding along the expressway. While it is now embraced by the community, this mural spent much of its existence in danger of being erased permanently. The guerilla artist behind the rainbow tunnel saw his work painted over by the pre-amalgamation North York parks department several times, and faced dozens of arrests during his many visits to touch up the painting over the years. Since being restored in 2012, the tunnel's brightly coloured paintjob is now maintained by both the community and the Parks Department, and has gone from a piece of unlicensed graffiti to a beloved community artwork. In today's Photo of the Day, the tunnel can be seen illuminated by a phalanx of sparks from burning steel wool as it is spun rapidly.
