Lying to the west of Toronto, Erin Mills Town Centre shopping mall is undergoing a major renovation. Until recently, the 25-year old complex had not been substantially updated since its opening in 1989. With many shopping complexes in the Greater Toronto Area expanding or renovating their existing spaces, Erin Mills Town Centre is similarly investing in its future now too. Owner Ontario Pension Board and 20VIC Management's main goal is to propel the mall into a vibrant urban retail destination, bringing in new retailers while updating the centre's aesthetics inside and out. New high ceilings throughout the common spaces, modern windows and skylights for improved natural lighting, brand new escalators, and European limestone flooring will just be some of the improvements taking place as part of the Erin Mills Town Centre Redevelopment Project.

Reinventing one of Mississauga's major shopping malls doesn't come cheap. Interior and exterior work is budgeted at approximately $100 million dollars. Recent images show significant progress. Most notably, where the locally iconic clock tower in the mall's main courtyard once stood, the structure is being readied for a new landmark.

Replacing the clock tower will be a 283-foot high glass sphere skylight. The point-supported sphere, engineered by MMC Architecture, and will be the largest of its kind in the world when completed later this year.

The structure for the sphere has now arrived onsite, with the pieces laid out in the parking lot and ready for assembly.

Interior work is already going smoothly. High ceilings, natural light from clerestory windows, and modern colours are turning this once dated space into a sleek, contemporary, and more inviting one. Landscaped courtyards and creature comforts will follow, designed by GHA Design.

Tomorrow is an exciting time for the mall, as August 1st marks a milestone as part of the redevelopment project with the opening of the mall's newest anchor store, a 135,000 square foot Target. Committed to attracting new customers and looking to turn around its fortunes in Canada since a shaky launch, Target will be offering special Grand Opening coupon deals. Alongside the opening, special contests and gift card events will be taking place during "The Spot To Be" event on Saturday August 2nd.
