The former municipality of North York has seen some dramatic changes since the 1980's, when the suburb's mayor, and future Toronto mayor Mel Lastman pushed for intensification along the Yonge Street corridor between Sheppard and Finch. The area saw another major catalyst for intensification in 2002 with the opening of the Sheppard subway, which created a transit hub and subsequently increased property values significantly. Today, the intersection of Yonge and Sheppard looks far more urban than suburban, and development continues to transform the area into a high-density, mixed-use community.
