The growing number of both professional and amateur photographers using the UrbanToronto Forum is pretty difficult to ignore. While we tend to focus on topics like development, transit and real-estate, photography has become a major part of our Forum, with various members new and old helping to document our growing city with their outstanding photographic contributions. To highlight some of the individual members who work to make our Forum such an interesting place, we recently created a new recurring feature; UrbanToronto Photographer of the Week. For our fourth installment, we selected UT member Yonderbean, known outside of the Forum as Mathew Borrett.

Like many in the UrbanToronto community, Mathew has a keen interest in art, photography, and of course architecture. Building structures out of Lego as of the age of 4 and getting his first camera at the age of 11, Mathew has been following these interests since early in his childhood, which has led up to his current career in the television and film visual effects industry.

Using a mirrorless Olympus OM-D E-M5 camera and a growing collection of lenses, Mathew currently pursues photography as a hobby, as well as using his camera at work for matte painting (a very cool special effect used in filmmaking).

An UrbanToronto member since 2009, Mathew has become known on the Forum for his picturesque urban cityscapes and evocative street photography captured while biking to and from work - often during the brief yet brilliant ‘magic hour’, where gold and pink hues are cast across the city courtesy of the setting sun.

Just as interesting are his photos of some of Toronto’s construction sites, which provide us with much appreciated updates on various high profile projects, like the 47-storey, architectsAlliance-designed Theatre Park, seen below, and the Kirkor Architects-designed Cinema Tower below that.

In addition to photography and special effects, Mathew is also an immensely talented illustrator and artist. For anyone with an interest in art, we highly recommend that you take a look at his website, www.MathewBorrett.com. Looking for more of Mathew’s photography? Additional images can be found on his Flickr page, specifically his unique collection of photos titled "Around Toronto".

We will return next week to feature another photographer from our Forum. Think you've got what it takes? Grab a camera or mobile device and get to work, then post your content in the Forum, and you just may find yourself featured in next week’s article!
