As our city’s record setting growth spurt continues to produce scores of new structures every month, a growing body of both amateur and professional photographers have been using the UrbanToronto Forum to give us their take on this rapidly changing region. While artistic and abstract photography is more prevalent on the “City Photos and Videos” section of the Forum, the journalistic style of photography found in the “Projects and Construction” section threads provides a valuable visual resource to readers looking for comprehensive project updates. These journalistic shots come from a wide range of frequent Forum contributors, some of whom tend to stand out from the pack. For this week’s Photographer of the Week, we selected Forum contributor “Red Mars”, known beyond UrbanToronto as Harvey McGrath.

Using a Samsung PL210 point-and-shoot camera, Harvey provides valuable construction updates from across the city, documenting projects in every stage of construction. When selecting photos for this article, we decided to highlight Harvey’s documentary prowess by showing several different projects he has captured in various stages of site prep, demolition and construction.

A UT member since 2009, Harvey developed his interest in construction and architecture due to his background, which includes underwriting Professional Liability Insurance for Architects and Engineers as well as spending many years visiting A&E (architecture and engineering) firms and participating in Loss Prevention Seminars.

Since receiving a life-saving liver transplant in the summer of 2012 due to cancer, Harvey has dedicated much of his spare time to promoting organ donor awareness by asking Canadians to register with BeADonor.ca, an important message we decided to echo in this article.
