A lot of things can change in one month’s time. When you visit a construction site exactly once every 30 days, it can really help in understanding the scope of work involved in constructing a new building. When we last visited The Daniels Corporation’s NY2 at the end of July, the building stood four storeys above Sheppard Avenue, just east of Bayview. Now, a month later, work is underway on the seventh and final residential floor of the Core Architects-designed project.

While builders (and the City) do what they can to minimize disruptions during construction, we arrived at one of those moments when new development means temporary inconvenience to those in the area: traffic was restricted on Rean Drive as a portable crane was brought in to lift heavy wall elements into place on the east side of NY2’s ground floor.

The portable crane is also being used to help assemble a temporary construction hoist needed to move hardware and workers up the structure.

The tower crane was also doing some heavy lifting, removing fly forms from where their job was done on a completed floor.

The first bits of cladding are now visible on the southeast corner of NY2’s ground floor.  In the photo below we see a dark tinted glass with white spandrel framed by slate-gray mullions.

With concrete formwork under way on the final residential floor at the site’s north end, it won’t be long until the mechanical penthouse is built and the tower crane is disassembled. Work will now be ramping up on the building’s interior fittings.

As the final phase of Daniels’ NY Towers community, the 140-unit project, currently slated for Summer 2014 completion, will contain suites available under Daniels’ Rent-to-Own Program. All residents at NY2 will have access to the building’s many amenities, including a fully-equipped fitness room, Wi-Fi café lounge, rooftop party spaces and outdoor gardening plots.
