36Hazelton is the latest luxury boutique-size residential condominium residence under construction in Yorkville. We've been following work on this Alterra and Zinc Developments project: the yellow frames being used to brace the facade of the former St. Basil's Catholic School make things that much more interesting. Today we get a better look at what's going on behind the facade as well.

The upper levels will feature a modern look, but understated so that they blend beautifully with the elegant heritage facade. In charge of this unique architectural ensemble is Quadrangle Architects with heritage specialists Goldsmith Borgal and Company Architects.

The 1928-era schoolhouse has seen many uses over the years, including office space in the 1970s. With a deep excavation pit behind the facade, substantial bracing is required to keep the facade in place until the new structure is built behind it.

The shovel, even with an arm as long as that, is now longer scooping anything out of the pit.

…and this is the rest of the pit. Footings for the building's foundations are in place, and the first columns and walls have been poured.

When complete, 36Hazelton suites will range from 1,200 square feet for the smaller units, to 4,600 square feet for the penthouse units. Only a few remain. All units at 36Hazelton will feature personlized floor plans, generous outdoor terrances for each unit, and spacious rooms with ten-foot ceilings. Residents will have access to a number of refined amenities aimed at recreation, relaxation, and entertainment. Naturally, these exclusive suites do not come cheap—they're roughly 2.8 million and up—but the lifestyle offered here promises to be worth it for those with the means to afford it.
