It has been little over a month since we last checked in on The Berwick and CityTowns, a 17-storey tower and townhome complex at Yonge and Eglinton by Andrin Homes and The Brown Group of Companies. In the time since, the Page + Steele / IBI Group Architects-designed project has doubled in height, rising from four storeys to eight in just five weeks.

The rate of around one floor constructed per-week will presumably slow down temporarily as crews get used to the new floor layouts above the second setback, and then speed back up with work on an even smaller footprint.

Construction on the underground parking entrance and the townhouse portion at the site’s north end was plagued early on with groundwater issues. After some complicated dewatering operations, the issue was remedied. In the months since, concrete work on the low-rise portion of the project has reached grade.

When we stopped by the site yesterday afternoon, a large concrete pour was underway for the ground floor of the northern portion.

Since the staging area used by concrete trucks is dozens of meters from the site of the pour, a large portable concrete pump was brought in via flatbed truck to reach across the site and execute the pour.

The parking garage’s spiral ramp continues to take shape at the site’s eastern edge. In the photo below, the long boom of the concrete pump stretches over the ramp’s formwork as a large pour continues to the immediate south.

Though formwork on the project’s extreme northern edge is still partially below grade, the low-rise nature of these townhomes leads us to assume that the tower and townhomes will top off within a relatively short time of one another.

The 205-unit condominium developed is slated for completion in 2014.
