With the summer in full swing, warm weather and lengthy daylight hours are leading to increased activity and progress on our city’s countless construction projects. Out of the dozen-or-so construction sites located in the growing Bloor-Yorkville neighbourhood, we have been paying close attention to CHAZ Yorkville Condos, a 47-storey condominium by developer 45 Charles Ltd. and project manager Edenshaw Homes.
When we last checked in on CHAZ Yorkville Condos a month ago, work was underway on the building’s P2 underground level. Now, one month later, concrete formwork is nearly finished on the uppermost underground floor, and crews will soon be at work on the five-storey podium.
Somehow, now that the work is just about at ground level, the objects being built don't just seem bigger because they are closer, now the whole project looks bigger. While the size of construction sites can be hard to comprehend when they just show concrete walls, the photo below includes lots of surrounding buildings for reference.
The Page + Steele/ IBI Group Architects design takes its inspiration from the faceted angular aesthetic of its brutalist, Macy Dubois-designed predecessor. Aesthetics aside, the irregularly shaped floorplates of the tower will offer more corner units than your typical rectangular building. With the building preparing to climb above ground and a tentative completion date of mid-late 2014, we are anticipating the rise of CHAZ, as well as its contribution to the expanding Bloor-Yorkville skyline.
