There is so much developent activity going on in the downtown area that we tend to overlook some significant projects in other parts of the city that are changing the character of the inner-suburban landscape. One Valhalla Towns & Condos and Thunderbird Phase 2 by Edilcan Development Corporation brings a density of development to Etobicoke more often seen closer to downtown. One Valhalla is under construction at 1 Valhalla Inn Road on the site of the former Valhalla Inn, a kitschy nordic-inspired hotel that welcomed visitors from the early 1960s until 2009, when Edilcan bought the location for this new development.
One Valhalla consists of three towers of 22, 30 and 35-storeys in addition to a complex of 68 townhomes of 2 and 3 storeys. The development is taking place on a relatively large site, quite a bit larger than what is usually available downtown, which allows for more townhomes in one project than are found closer to the core. The size of the site and the low-rise nature of most Etobicoke neighbourhoods combined with the combination of high-rise condo towers abutting Highway 427 and low-rise townhomes closer to The East Mall allows One Valhalla to mix the City's desire to increase density with appropriate neighbourhood form. Most of the townhomes are complete, but only the smallest of the towers has been finshed.

When this Page & Steele/IBI Group and ERA Architects-designed complex is finished, One Valhalla will bring a significant amount of residential space to the Highway 427 corridor that has historically been used for commerical purposes or low-rise residential neighbourhoods separated from the highway by noise barriers.
