Concord Adex, the developer behind Downtown's CityPlace and North York's Park Place, has been working on building strong communities in its large-scale high-rise neighbourhoods through community initiatives and resident engagement. Earlier this week saw the trial launch of a farmers’ market in CityPlace, an event organized in part by the CityPlace Residents Association.

A new initiative out of Concord Adex is the launch of ArtSpace, public art websites dedicated to spreading awareness of Concord’s extensive public art contribution at both its CityPlace and Park Place sites. ArtSpace lists 15 installations as having already been built in CityPlace, with an additional four en-route. Designed by a roster of internationally known artists, the art attempts to enliven the pedestrian experience within the neighbourhood, encouraging interaction with the pieces and bringing colour and texture into the predominantly glass landscape. Three installations have debuted in Park Place, with another three to be installed at a future date.

One artist that figures prominently in the artistic landscape of CityPlace is Francisco Gazitua, the Chilean designer behind Puente de Luz Bridge, Rosa Nautica and Barca Volante. The three pieces emphasize the plasticity of steel under modern technology. The two steel sculptures are decidedly nautical in theme, while the Puente de Luz Bridge is more about the "iron horse" and is meant to add a pop of colour to the surrounding grey landscape. Other well-known artists that have contributed to CityPlace include Maha Mustafa and Douglas Coupland.

Concord ArtSpace is currently holding a photography competition entitled “Through Your Lens”. Sure to appeal to the shutterbugs on the UrbanToronto forum, Concord is asking you to submit photos of your favorite installation in the neighbourhood on the dedicated Facebook page. Prizes include an all expenses paid trip for two to Chicago as well as memberships to the ROM and AGO. Contest details can be found here.
