A phantom of our former industrialized waterfront, the Canada Malting Silos stand unused at the corner of Bathurst Street and Queens Quay. Together with its lonely, derelict eastern partner, this is a member of an endangered architectural species. In a city that can be insensitive to the need for preservation, attempts to retain our industrial heritage can be especially challenging. Given the erasure of much of the waterfront's commercial buildings, it is all the more pressing that we work to safeguard our remaining building stock. Creative reuse of former industrial spaces can, after all, yield some of the most interesting and innovative spaces in a city.
