UrbanToronto has partnered with Heritage Toronto to capture a moment in Toronto's past. On a weekly basis, we highlight historic photos of the city's people, places and events, and tell the stories behind them.

In 1926, the Toronto Board of Education decided to build Allenby Public School in Toronto's Lawrence Park. Named after Lord Edmund Allenby, the school wasn't opened until 1931. Here, in this photograph from 1929, we see the school's original grounds before the yard was developed. You may also notice how much bigger the school is today, since it was renovated and enlarged in 1972 and again in 1994.

Many thanks to both Gary Switzer of MOD Developments and Maya Bilbao for putting together the photos and research.
