The Toronto Society of Architects is holding what should prove to be an interesting discussion regarding transit architecture. The TSA's urban affairs forum will feature guest speakers including Richard Stevens of SGA-IBI Group and Dylan Reid of Spacing Magazine. Antonio Gomez-Palacio, an executive at TSA, will moderate the forum.

The discussion will look at examples of transit infrastructure from a variety of cities, and will examine the design proposals for the new TTC stations along the currently-extending Spadina line. These stations feature designs by well-known architectural offices such as Alsop Architects, SGA-IBI Group and Grimshaw Architects. A proactive approach has been taken in the station designs, with features meant to maximize natural light and the installation of green roofs, opposed to the often sterile station designs we're used to seeing.

The forum will look at the merits of high quality urban and architectural design within transit infrastructure, and will ask questions that are especially relevant in the case of Toronto. In particular it will discuss the implications these designs will have for taxpayers and the city, and what architecture can do for people in creating functional spaces that get users from one place to another.

The forum will be held on May 1st from 6:30 to 8:30 pm in the Great Hall at the Arts and Letters Club, located at 14 Elm Street. For more information, check out the TSA's website, or send them an email at tsa@torontosocietyofarchitects.ca. The forum is open to the public, and no rsvp is required — be sure to arrive early though, as this will no doubt be a popular event.
