In a city better known for its acres of plain and predictable tracts of housing, the arrival of Absolute World in Mississauga provides a welcome jolt of excitement. Curvaceous and energetic, the form of these 50- and 56-storey siblings is as rare as the process that created them. While design competitions are common for public institutions, they are exceedingly rare for private developers; something remedied by Cityzen and Fernbrook Homes. The competition launched by the developers drew 92 submissions from 70 countries, drawing in an abundance of talent. The winner of the competition, Yangong Ma of MAD Architects, has crafted a building that shows not only the wonderfully versatile nature of concrete as a building material but also demonstrates the ever-growing sophistication of structural engineering.
