In February 2010, Toronto City Council adopted a motion to undertake a request for proposal for designers to submit proposals for the design, construction and installation of a lifeguard stand prototype for use on the City's beaches.  As part of the improvements outlined in 2009's Great City, Great Beaches: The Toronto Beaches Plan, the lifeguard stands are designed by Paul Raff Studio Architects.

The City of Toronto set out a list of stringent requirements regarding design, materials and longevity for the new stands. According to a spokesperson from the winning design firm, "the competition winning design successfully reconciles a diverse set of technical requirements for storage, signage, public safety, durability and cost while achieving an iconic design that appropriately conveys the quality of Toronto's swimming beaches."

There are currently 32 of the new lifeguard stands on order. Council has yet to determine when they will be installed.  With the summer season only about two months off, here's hoping we see these spiffy new lifeguard stands on Toronto's beaches soon!
