Tens of thousands of glass panes have been installed on condo towers throughout the city in the past few years.  A few incidents with the Murano's glass has placed focus on other isolated incidents of falling glass from condo towers.

Lanterra is working to address the issue at Murano.  Hording has returned to the street as the glass issue appears to be expanding beyond just the North Tower, with the South Tower having a similar incident this week.  Several residents of Murano have not been able to access their balconies while repairs are under way.

Falling debris on public streets makes a case for designing poduims into projects.  Whether glass, ice, or other debris, the impact would be less to the public if they felt sheltered.  A setback would take away from floor space, but perhaps now is the time for the city to be more flexible with podiums over hanging the sidewalks.  Some might complain about blocking the sunshine, but the skyscraper canyon along Bay St. already accomplishes that most of the day.
