One St Thomas

One St. Thomas

This 29-storey condominium building and its adjoining townhouses are located at the corner of St. Thomas Street and Charles Street, a block away from Bay Street, one of Toronto's primary retail and office corridors. The massing of the tower is subdivided into the traditional base, middle, and top that characterize classic highrise buildings. The three-storey stone tower base, which relates to the attached townhouses and to the scale of the lower neighboring residences, contains condominium-related amenities. Fronting St. Thomas Street are the main lobby entrance and an opening that leads behind the building to a porte-cochere residential entrance, an underground parking entrance, and a service area. Immediately adjacent to the porte-cochere is a formal garden for residents. The attached townhouses make a literal scale connection to the tightly-spaced freestanding townhouses that once typified this neighborhood. The shaft of the tower is modulated with bay windows, cast stone pilasters, cornices, and balconies, taking cues from its historic Toronto neighbors and recalling North America's grand urban apartment buildings of the 1920s and 1930s. The stepped top houses special penthouse apartments with open terraces.
